How Is Your Mother-In-Law Like Your Customers?

Mothers-in-laws are______________(you fill in the blank)

For those of us who are married, our mother-in-law can be a blessing or a curse. Or perhaps just a benign acquaintance. However, when we were courting our spouses, the relationship with our future mother-in-law was probably a BIG FACTOR in how the outcome of our relationship with our future spouse would develop. Think of your spouse as your business.

So…what did we do to win over our spouses (increase our business)?

Well, we sucked up to…um, I mean….we tried to develop a relationship with their mother and become friends with them. We paid attention to their mother’s problems and concerns. We tried to help their mothers when they needed it and we complimented them whenever we could.

O.K.,  so maybe we didn’t do all that, or even any of that, but it sure would have made us look good, don’t you think? Perhaps in a perfect world.

What about your customers? Or even your prospects? Imagine how they’d feel if you paid attention to their problems and concerns, tried to help them when they needed it and complimented them whenever we could. How would you feel if someone did that for you? I mean, of course, after the initial suspicion had passed. You would feel cared for, right? Isn’t that what everyone is looking for? Absolutely! And what do you think would happen now, if you began selling them on your crap….I mean, products or services? Would they be more inclined to do business with you?

You bet they would!

So what have we learned here?

You’ve heard it before, folks. Relationships are what it’s all about. Building relationships and maintaining them is what keeps you in business. It’s what keeps the customer coming back. Every business should be a “family” business.
